I am interested in mathematical ontology and in the application of mathematical tools in philosophy of religion. I have written on Nietzsche, metaphor, counterpart theory, infinity, computation, transhumanism, the resurrection of the body, and non-theistic models of God.

The Logic of Metaphor uses techniques from possible worlds semantics to provide formal truth-cond... more The Logic of Metaphor uses techniques from possible worlds semantics to provide formal truth-conditions for many grammatical classes of metaphors. It gives logically precise and practically useful syntactic and semantic rules for generating and interpreting metaphors. These rules are implemented in a working computer program. The book treats the lexicon as a conceptual network with semantics provided by an intensional predicate calculus. It gives rules for finding analogies in such networks. It shows how to syntactically and semantically analyze texts containing metaphors and how to use structural similarities between parts of possible worlds to provide truth-conditions for metaphors. Meanings for metaphors are linked to the modal logics of identity and indiscernibility. The book shows how to extend deductive and abductive inference systems to handle metaphors. It shows how to handle novel metaphorical word-senses. The Logic of Metaphor will be useful to philosophers, logicians, linguists, and computer scientists.

The book focuses on Nietzsche's ideas and arguments, not on his personality or his biography. It reveals the consistency and power of his thought. It aims to present Nietzsche's main ideas with analytic clarity and precision. On Nietzsche deals with Nietzsche's epistemology, his ontology, his philosophy of religion, and his ethics. The book is filled with extensive references to Nietzsche's writings.

Atheistic modal realism asserts roughly that there are many concrete possible worlds and that the... more Atheistic modal realism asserts roughly that there are many concrete possible worlds and that the actual world is entirely godless. Here I will refine this position using the modal realism of David Lewis. For Lewis, all gods (including the Christian God) are contingent superhuman persons, who inhabit non-actual worlds. Although gods are concrete world-bound particulars, atheistic modal realism has room for impersonal absolutes and ultimates (which are not gods). Since no gods are actual, atheism is true. Yet there are infinitely many non-actual gods. Non-actual gods and worlds provide resources for analysing religious beliefs and practices. Lewisian theology provides a powerful new way for atheists to understand religion.

In the discussion of the thermal history of the early universe form temperatures 10 11 • K down t... more In the discussion of the thermal history of the early universe form temperatures 10 11 • K down to about 10 6 • K we were neglecting the tiny contribution of relict nucleons which were not completely annihilated in particle-antiparticle annihilation. O Nucleons, the building blocks of atomic nuclei, were formed abundantly in the QCD phase transition out of the quark-gluon plasma at temperatures T ∼ 150 MeV corresponding to a temperature T ∼ 2 × 10 12 • K and cosmic time t ∼ 20µs. O The QCD phase transition sets in after the annihilation of the heavier quarks (t, b, c) during the annihilation of s quarks. During the QCD phase transition color neutral S U(3) c triplet states form, the baryons, as well as anti-triplets representing the antibaryons together with quark-antiquark singlets, the mesons. The lightest hadrons are the nucleons (N), proton (p) and neutron (n), and their antiparticles (spin 1/2 fermions), which when formed are non-relativistic (essentially at rest) and the lightest mesons, the pions π ± and π 0 (spin 0 bosons).
