The User Switching module lets administrators quickly switch between WordPress user accounts without logging out. This makes it easy to test user roles, troubleshoot permissions, and view the site exactly as another user would—saving time and simplifying support.
How to use
To enable the User Switching Module:
- Click on the “Users” category
- Search or scroll to locate the User Switching Module
- Click on the switch to enable
What’s next?
This module allows administrators to quickly switch between different user accounts without needing to log out and log back in. This is particularly useful for:
- Testing user permissions and capabilities
- Troubleshooting user-specific issues
- Providing support by viewing the site as another user
Key Features:
- Switch To User: Hover over any user in the Users list and click “Switch To” to instantly become that user
- Switch Back: A “Switch back to [Original User]” link appears in the admin bar when you’re viewing as another user
- User Profiles: Switch to any user directly from their profile page
- Security: Only users with the
edit_users capability (typically administrators) can use the switch feature
How It Works:
- To switch to another user:
- Go to Users > All Users
- Hover over any user and click “Switch To”
- You’ll be logged in as that user immediately
- To switch back:
- Look for the “Switch back to [Your Username]” link in the admin bar
- Click it to return to your administrator account
- To temporarily log out:
- Use the “Switch Off” feature to log out while keeping your session active
- Log back in without needing to re-enter your credentials
Important Notes:
- User switching is only available to administrators
- All actions are logged for security purposes
- The original user’s session remains active while switched to another user
- Session data is preserved when switching between users
This module is particularly valuable for developers, support staff, and site administrators who need to troubleshoot or demonstrate functionality from different user perspectives.
