Are your index and ring fingers the same length or is the ring finger longer?
For most men, the ring finger is slightly longer, and in most women, the two fingers are the same length. But men whose fingers are the same length seem to have a special skill at scientific research.
Why? New Scientist reports that researchers from Bath University in Great Britain say this is due to above average prenatal levels of estrogen that aid their analytical skills. It is thought that estrogen causes the right side of the brain to develop, which is responsible for spatial and analytical skills. In other words, these scientists are in touch with their feminine side. (Some developmental genes, which would be impacted by exposure to estrogen and testosterone, control the formation of both the reproductive system and the fingers.)
The opposite is also true. While those who had a \"female\" pattern of hormone exposure in the womb became scientists, those who had a \"male\" pattern and whose ring finger is slightly longer than the index finger chose the field of social science, notes New Scientist.
In this study, all the researchers in the departments of chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics had index and ring fingers that were about the same length, a clearly feminine trait; however, fully 81 percent of them were male. But in the departments of economics, education, management, and social and policy sciences, most had a ring finger that was slightly longer than the index finger, a distinctly male trait, but only 66 percent of the sample was male.
\"It's unnerving to think the profession I'm in was determined by the hormones I was exposed to in the womb,\" lead study author Mark Brosnan told New Scientist.
He speculates that exposure to unusually high or low levels of testosterone in male fetuses leads to the scientific brain, while average levels of hormone exposure lead to a social science brain.

Remember the good old days when TV networks copied each other without even trying to be creative? Now every rip-off comes with a twist, as in \"How about 'Survivor' where all the challenges make you sick?\" or \"Let's do 'The Bachelor' with little people!\" But none of those copycats are as shameless as the imitators spawned by \"Extreme Makeover,\" a feel-good show that follows people before, during and after plastic surgery. In fact, MTV's \"I Want a Famous Face\" and Fox's \"The Swan\" may be two of the ugliest reality shows yet.<\/p>\n

 
\"I Want a Famous Face\" is disgusting in so many ways, it's hard to know where to begin. The show is exactly what it sounds like\u2014a look at people who not only don't like their appearance, they want to assume the identity of their favorite celebrity. A plus-size woman gets tucked, lifted and lipoed in hopes of looking like Kate Winslet. A professional Britney Spears impersonator goes in for Britney-size breasts. Most freakish of all, identical twins both want to look like Brad Pitt. Do any of these wanna-bes end up looking like their idols? Occasionally. But that's not the point. \"Famous Face\" sends horrendous messages about self-esteem and celebrity worship, not to mention potentially demoralizing young viewers who can't afford this kind of plastic happiness. MTV, which doesn't pay for the medical work, argues it's just monitoring a social phenomenon\u2014it calls \"Famous Face\" a documentary, not a reality show. But every time a doctor comes on screen, the producers play music that chimes \"ta-da!\" like an angel has entered the room. That's hardly the work of a serious documentary.<\/p>\n

MTV is clearly nervous about how \"Famous Face\" might affect its impressionable audience. The show goes out of its way to include gruesome footage of the procedures, apparently to convince viewers that plastic surgery is no picnic. To underline that warning, many episodes include a short segment called \"Another Story,\" where various patients soberly explain how their surgery was botched. But all the blood and pain are largely forgotten by the end of the show, when the medically induced celebrities return and proclaim themselves thrilled. \"Now when I go out, I know I'm looking good,\" says one \"Pitt\" twin, who required chin implants, jaw implants, cheek implants, a nose job and tooth veneers to achieve the desired effect. \"It's good to have that confidence.\" The message is clear, unbeautiful people. it actually was a 4 day weekend for me...so i guess i'll start on friday...

woke up...showered...studied for a little bit...then i met marisa for lunch at the good ole' lindencrest...it was very nice...got my haircut...then thomas and i had a little double date with serina and barbara at Don Ricardo's...this nice Spanish\/Mexican Restaurant in Babylon village...after finishing off two \"large\" daquiries we made our way to that new lesbian bar in lindenhurst...\"Pat's Place\"...it was quiet...and i think it's a problem...the last two bars i've been to have been girl bars...but whatever...a few drinks before my test would allow me to sleep pleasantly...and i did...

saturday began with the GRE...then i came home...relaxed, cleaned, and did anything non-science i could...which meant veg out in front of the TV...that evening we made our way down to Virginia to spend sunday\/monday in Williamsburg...with tom's family...i really wasn't all that nervous about spending time with them...they're really nice and wholesome...it's like nothing i've ever seen before...

colonial williamsburg is beautiful...the weather was nice at times...but windy and cold at times too...busch gardens was a lot of fun...until i felt a little sick after riding one of the rollercoasters...which i usually enjoy...oh well...

we got home at like 3am...making really good time...even though we got side-tracked on I-95 and ended up driving through Philadelphia...it was nice to get away for a few days...from LI...i should do it more often i feel...

in other happenings...i got a friendster account...it seems like a silly waste of time...but it gives me something to do at work when there's downtime i suppose...

i also got new glasses!...with them and my facial hair...i look like an NYU film student...lol...
