Introduction
Video Popup is the ultimate WordPress plugin for displaying videos with style and impact. It supports YouTube, Vimeo, MP4, and WebM videos, delivering elegant, responsive popups that keep your visitors engaged. Also, with its powerful On-Page Load feature, your videos can play automatically the moment a visitor opens the page, perfect for marketing campaigns, product launches, and brand showcases that need instant attention. Whether you’re featuring tutorials, demos, or promotional clips, Video Popup is a seamless and modern solution.
Why Use Video Popup?
Using Video Popup instantly boosts engagement and makes your content impossible to ignore. How to Create a Popup
There are two easy ways to create a video popup. You can use the Video Popup Builder in the Classic Editor, which provides a user-friendly interface for creating your popup and inserting it directly into your content. Alternatively, you can use the basic shortcode method, which allows you to add video popups anywhere on your site, including Gutenberg and page builders.
1. Using the Video Popup Builder:
To create a video popup using the Builder in the Classic Editor, simply select the text that you want the popup to appear when clicked, then click the Video Popup Builder icon in the editor’s toolbar. The builder interface will open, allowing you to enter the video URL and adjust other settings as you like. Screenshots (click on image to view it):
When you hover over any field, helpful notes and tips will appear to explain the purpose of the option.
For editing a video popup link: Simply select the link text, click the Video Popup Builder icon in the editor toolbar, and the builder interface will open, allowing you to edit the popup settings.
Note: If you select a link and its settings do not appear in the builder, make sure the link or text is not bold (B). If necessary, temporarily remove the bold formatting while editing, then reapply it after finishing the link edit.
Useful Plugin – From our plugins: If you want to add more classes or assign an ID to a Video Popup link, use the Extend Link plugin. It’s free, useful, and easy to use.

2. Using the Basic Shortcode:
[video_popup url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID" text="Watch My Video"]
There are many attributes for the basic shortcode (the same attributes are also supported in the On-Page Load shortcode). We have explained them in detail on the Video Popup Shortcode Reference page, which can be found within the plugin under the “Video Popup” menu in your WordPress admin dashboard.
Trigger Video Popup on a Link Click:
You can add the vp-a or vp-s class to any link anywhere on your site to trigger a video popup on click. vp-a enables autoplay, and vp-s disables autoplay. For example:
Autoplay: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-AS5DtDeqs" class="vp-a">Play Video</a> No autoplay: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-AS5DtDeqs" class="vp-s">Play Video</a>
Minimized Design
With the Premium version, you can display a video popup in a small, elegant design at the bottom of the page, on either the left or right side.
The minimized design works with all video popups, including Public On-Page Load, On-Page Load shortcodes, and on-click video popups created using the builder or basic shortcode.
Live Demos:
- YouTube: Play (Right side + Custom colors + Start video at 0:26).
- Vimeo: Play (Left side + Custom colors).
- MP4: Play (Right side + No border. read how to remove border).
- On-Page Load: Open Demo.

Did you like the Minimized design? Get the Premium version today and enjoy this powerful feature along with more advanced options for your video popups.

Public On-Page Load
With the Public On-Page Load, you can set up a video to automatically show as a popup on multiple locations at once, like all posts or all pages.
On-Page Load Shortcode
With the Public On-Page Load, you can set up a video to automatically show as a popup on multiple locations at once, like all posts or all pages. With the On-Page Load Shortcode (in the premium version), you can show a different popup with a different video on a specific page or post. It works independently from the Public On-Page Load, giving you more flexibility to show multiple popups with different videos!
Example:
// Basic Design
[video_popup_opl url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-AS5DtDeqs" mute="1"]
// Minimized Design on the Right side
[video_popup_opl url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-AS5DtDeqs" mute="1" minimize="right"]
Autoplay is enabled by default. To disable autoplay, use this attribute auto="1".
The On-Page Load shortcode supports the same attributes as the Basic Shortcode, plus 6 additional attributes of its own. We have explained all the attributes in detail on the Video Popup Shortcode Reference page, which can be found within the plugin.
Live Demos:
- Single On-Page Load Video Popup (minimized design).
- Single On-Page Load Video Popup (basic design).
- Double On-Page Load Video Popups.
- Triple On-Page Load Video Popups.
Live Demos
Below you’ll find a variety of examples that demonstrate the power and flexibility of the Video Popup plugin. We could create many more examples and live demos, but we’ve kept it concise to give you a clear overview of what the plugin can do. Most YouTube examples can also be applied to Vimeo and MP4 videos, and vice versa, except for the Start and End Time features. Adding Light Blur Effect (premium version only): Set the overlay color to “#ffffff” and the opacity value to “20” or lower if desired. Example: Play.
Adding Dark Blur Effect (premium version only): Set the overlay color to “#000000” and the opacity value to “20” or lower if desired. Example: Play.
Remove border from the minimized design (premium version only): Set the opacity value to “0” to remove the border. If you want to change the close button color, set a color code for the overlay color. The color will be applied to the button instead of the overlay. Example: Play (in this example, we used #F48A55 for the overlay color and set the opacity value to 0).
Note about Minimized Design on Mobile Screens: On screens 768px or smaller, the Minimized Design will automatically switch to the Basic Design. Other settings, such as overlay color, opacity, and more, will remain the same; only the layout changes. For example, this video (click here – minimized design) will appear like this (click here – basic design) on small tablets and mobile screens.
Creating an Elegant or On-Brand Video Popup Design:
With the Premium version, you can customize the overlay color, overlay opacity, popup size, minimized design (left/right side), and more. The overlay color and opacity options add elegance to your popup design (play this video). The following examples show how to add an elegant touch to both the basic popup and the minimized popup:
- Basic Popup: In this example (play video), we used “#633B97” for the overlay color and set the overlay opacity value to “35“. We also set the width to “800px” and the height to “450px“. Finally, we set the start time to “5” (to start the video at 0:05) and enabled the Autoplay option.
- Minimized Popup: In this example (play video), we used “#BCAC97” for the overlay color and set the overlay opacity value to “90“. We also enabled the autoplay option and selected the Minimized design on the Right Side.
- How to Get Color Code: There are many browser extensions that help you pick a color from a video. We used the ColorZilla extension on Google Chrome. For example, we picked the red color (#A51C29) for this video (play).
We’re not done with the live demos yet! With the “Display YouTube Video Preview Image” option in the builder or the video_image=”1″ attribute in the basic shortcode, you can show a YouTube preview image linked to a Video Popup. Example (click on the images below):

Licensing FAQs
- Can I use the Premium version after purchase without activating my license?
- You can use our products without activating your license. Activation is optional. However, without activation, you won’t receive automatic updates. But you can download updates manually from your SellAny account.
- Please note: not activating your license does not allow you to use the product on more websites than your license permits. For example, if you have a Single License, whether you activate it or not, you may only install the product on one website. If you want to move the product to another website, you must first deactivate or remove it from the first website before installing it on the new one. Please respect these usage limits to ensure compliance with the license terms.
- How to Manually Install an Update?
- After downloading an update (zip file) from SellAny to your device, deactivate the current version on your site and delete it. Then, install the update like any other WordPress plugin. Don’t worry, after manually updating, all the premium version settings and options will remain saved, and you won’t need to adjust them again!
- Can I move my license to another site after it’s been activated?
- Yes! You can revoke your license key on a website and then activate it on new one. Our licenses are flexible and allow you to transfer activation between sites.
- What’s the difference between Single, Extended, and Business licenses?
- Single License: Allows installation and activation on 1 website.
- Extended License: Allows installation and activation on 5 websites*.
- Business License: Allows installation and activation on 40 websites*.
- *For the Extended and Business licenses, you are free to use the product/license on both your own websites and your clients’ websites — as long as the total number of sites does not exceed your license limit.
- We reserve the right to increase the activation limit for any license without prior notice.
- If I purchased a product with a one-time payment, will I receive lifetime updates?
- No, a one-time payment does not mean you will receive lifetime updates. We sell the product as-is, connected to our update server to notify you when updates are available, through which you can download and install updates. We cannot provide lifetime updates, but of course, you can use any of our products after purchase without activating the license as you wish. For more details, read the Purchase Policy.
Changelog for the Premium Version
v2.0.2 – Changes:
Core improvements.
After updating, no action is required on your part. Enjoy!
v2.0.1 – Changes:
Fixed an issue that prevented MP4 and WebM videos from autoplaying in On Click popups. Autoplay now works properly even without muted sound for all supported video types (YouTube, Vimeo, MP4, and WebM) in On Click popups only. However, when using the Public On-Page Load feature, the video must be muted to ensure autoplay works due to browser autoplay policies.
Note: If you are using a caching plugin, please clear your cache once to ensure the update is applied correctly.
v2.0.0 – First premium version.
When a new version is released, its details will appear here and in the update center.
Note for Customers Who Purchased the Premium Extension
Did you purchase the “Premium Extension” for the Video Popup plugin v1.1.4 or earlier?
Support for the Premium Extension (for Video Popup v1.1.4 and earlier) has been discontinued after 7 years since its release. The free version is now completely separate from the Premium Extension, so the Premium Extension options will no longer appear in the Video Popup v2. As a thank you, customers who purchased the Premium Extension can get an Extra 35% discount on any Premium version license.
We have sent an Extra 35% discount coupon to all customers who purchased the Premium Extension via email, but the message may not have reached everyone.
How To Get Your Discount: Contact us and provide your PayPal email address, the one you used to purchase the Premium Extension. Even if your current PayPal email has changed, also provide the previous one you used for the purchase before 2023. This allows us to check our old system records and verify your purchase. Once verified, you will receive an Extra 35% discount coupon for any Premium version license!
If you receive the discount coupon, it will be valid for you only and can be used for one purchase (any license) until January 4, 2026.
After upgrading to the Premium version: All your popups created with the free version in your content will continue to work seamlessly without the need for any edits! But you may need to set up the Public On-Page Load again. Read the first answer here.
Plugin FAQs
In both the free and premium versions, you will find clear explanations below each option and field. Each version also includes a Video Popup Shortcode Reference page that provides detailed documentation of all shortcode attributes and features, usage instructions, examples, and frequently asked questions. Below are some of the most important ones:
- What happens to my existing Video Popups after upgrading to the Premium version?
- After upgrading to the Premium version, all your popups created with any version in your content will continue to work seamlessly without the need for any edits. But, if you previously used the Public On-Page Load or adjusted the General Settings in the free version, you’ll need to set them up again in the Premium version, as these settings don’t transfer from the free version. Upgrade to the Premium version with no worries!
- What is the difference between the Basic Shortcode [video_popup] and the Video Popup Builder?
- The Basic Shortcode allows you to create video popup links, just like those made with the Video Popup Builder in the Classic Editor. It supports the same features and functionality as the Builder and serves as an alternative solution for websites that do not support the Classic Editor. It is also a perfect choice for Gutenberg and other page builders.
- Are YouTube Shorts supported in the Video Popup plugin?
- Yes! They are fully supported in both the free and premium versions, whether through the Builder, the Shortcode, or On-Page Load.
- What’s the difference between the Public On-Page Load and the On-Page Load Shortcode?
- With the Public On-Page Load, you can set up a video to automatically show as a popup on multiple locations at once, like all posts or all pages. With the On-Page Load Shortcode, you can show a different popup with a different video on a specific page or post. It works independently from the Public On-Page Load, giving you more flexibility to show multiple popups with different videos!
- Why does the On-Page Load popup only show after page has finished loading, and not while loading?
- To ensure the Video Popup Modal is ready, as showing it while page is loading could sometimes cause errors.
- Does the [video_popup_opl] shortcode work inside WooCommerce product content?
- Yes, it works. Both [video_popup_opl] and [video_popup] shortcodes work with any post type.
Feel free to check out the Screenshots of the Premium version.

Thank you very much . This plugin helped me very well
Hi
Have you added the option to disable related videos yet? That would make this the perfect plugin.
Thanks so much
I will add it, in the next update.
Is there a way to use any of your (video, image) plugins within a WordPress menu? I was using some Lightbox plugin but they have not updated it to WP 4.6. I just want to be able to have the video & image appear as lightbox items when clicking on the menu.
Thank you!
The plugin now is ready with WordPress 4.6:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/video-popup/
Nice plugin. Can the following be changed?
1. Can I resize the video popup?
Thanks.
In the next update.
hi,

I think the problem in your theme, anyway you can download old version.
Thanks for the plugin! Is it possible to play a self-hosted video instead of one hosted on youtube or vimeo?
Maybe in the next update.
Thank you for plugin
Can I do something like this for making bigger pop up window?
In the next update, wait.
how to resize the popup window?
In the next update, wait it.
Hi, even on your example page above, if you select a YouTube video, have it popup, then go full-screen on the video, parts of the webpage shows through the video.
This is a fairly recent occurrence.
Thanks!
The problem will be fixed in the next update.
Awesome! Thanks Qassim!
Thank you too.
Nice plug in. Can I run it through a thumbnails (image) click instead of text click?
Great plugin. Is there any way we can have a pop up that opens when the WP site opens? Like when I go to the home page it opens?
Is it possible to change the color on the link and how can i add space in the text, for example 3 things I love
Hey Qassim.
I installed Video PopUp plugin and inserted short code [video_popup url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWlfzQi16go" text="Click here" auto="no"] into my post and nothing shows up. I did not wrap the_excerpt(); of the post into any tags. I am developing on a local server. Can this be a reason?

Hello,
I installed this and it’s just what I needed – thanks! The only thing is, when you first click the link, it first loads to the actual vimeo URL, not the pop up. When I click the link 2nd or 3rd times, it goes to the pop up, so just the first click. This is the code I’m using:

When I embed my shortcode and test the link, two panels pop up, the regular video is on top and when you X out of it, there’s another image that’s popped up behind it that you need to X out of as well (my YouTube image). I’ve tried di=1 and di=0, but that doesn’t affect it. And idea how to make the background one go away?
There may be a conflict with your site. We will send a message to your email, so that we can help you easily. Please check your email.
Is there an option to automatically close the video on completion? Or is there a chance to add this in the next update?
There is no option, and we don’t make any promises to add this option.
Hi! Thank you for a great plugin. Is it possible to show the video popup on page load based on the url parameters? I’d like to use a video url ?video that shows our home page with the video overlay, so you click the video away and are on the home page. I don’t always want the video on the home, and I don’t want to make a copy of the home page (i.e. /video). Thank you!
This cannot be done.
When are you going to activate the purchase of Premium licenses? It is a fabulous plugin. Thanks.
