Yes, the code is changed in the (parent) functions.php. I found this thread on how to change the image size and realized that part of the issue is that the thumbnails had to be regenerated after the new size was defined. Which I’ve now done.
Now I’m trying to figure out if there is a way to change just the add-image-size definition through my child theme, instead of copying the entire function sketch_setup() into the chid php. And if there is a way to constrain the proportion of thumbnails that are between the medium and large image sizes defined in the media settings.
