It was indeed a bad plugin causing the problem.
I disabled and uninstalled W3 Total Cache and my site works fine again.
Yeah, I don’t know why others seem to love this plugin so much. It’s a lot of work just to configure, and it causes all kinds of other problems.
I don’t think that the problem is your fault because I was very careful with my research and setup but it still caused all kinds of unexpected problems.
You can hide them with your stylesheet.

Is there an actual option to turn them off?
