Thanks kmessinger your information was helpful. Two things; 1. my wp-config.php never showed that it was modified so I then 2. Went into the mysql database and located the “site url” in one of the tables and edited the address back to the original. Everything is back online.

Thanks and that exactly did the trick. The culprit turned out to be the AskApache Password Protect plugin which makes changes at the “server” level and causes login problems even a the admin level.
If anyone installs this plugin you MUST read the installation piece first in order to troubleshoot.
