    So far, so good !

    I used:

     define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', false );

    in the wp-config. php file, to turn off all updates.

    It’s been five days, surely far longer than it’s been stable before, and I’m getting optimistic the problem’s solved –

    Sadly I have to report that the working restore lasted just about two days before reverting to the same symptoms. Almost the same – the junk code on the home page is now better formatted into paragraphs.

    I’ve been coding for decades – and working with PHP and webpages for decades – but I’m at a loss to understand why/how the restore works for some hours or days and then returns to this state.

    I thought of shutting off various of my 20 plugins after a restore, but as there are more than a million combinations of 20 items it seems – like something I’m not going to do.

    Help, please. My friend has years of work into this lovely site.

    Thanks VERY much for the reply.
    I’ve restored a backup yet again, and, sure enough, there was a WP Bakery plugin – not activated.
    I’ve activated it of course, and will now wait – with crossed fingers.
    If this works, let us buy you a beer.

    WordPress 4.4.5 running Avada theme.

    Yes, I was using an up to date version of your plugin ( to the best of my knowledge. I had just pulled it down and installed it from the WP repository.)
    BTW: Now that I have your attention; I had used it on another site ( much larger) and had no install problems at all. It did seem to have some issues with the huge size of the site. I’d like to stay with it. Can you advise me on:
    1) how to get this install to work.
    2) any work arounds for issues with huge ( 2 GIG + )sites?
