I switched from BigCommerce and Zen-Cart to WooCommerce almost 10 years ago because I wanted to use the publishing features of WordPress and have them integrated into my online shopping cart. Things have been pretty good for me using a WordPress/WooCommerce setup, but I keep finding myself bogged down when my catalog starts getting up into the thousands of products. I especially start to see slow page loads in the admin section of my store after I get to 2,000 products added. The more I add after that, I keep seeing marginal drop-offs in performance. I now have almost 5,000 products in the store, and the performance has gotten to the point where I am wondering if I don’t need to check into using a different shopping cart system that can handle much more efficiently the indexing and other functions being done by WooCommerce.

One of the biggest limitations is that I can’t even do a product export, even if I limit the fields to just the product SKU and name.

I have worked with my host (Scala) to try to optimize the site. They have tried to be helpful, but almost everything they do has broken the site or caused the performance to be even worse.

Can someone point me to a resource I can use to figure out how to get my store to perform much better, especially the admin section? I’ve got a technical background, and I’m happy to educate myself on whatever material I need to keep me going with WooCommerce.

    Thanks, James. I’ll try that.

I was thinking that the issue I’m having might be related to core WordPress functionality, since WooCommerce products are essentially custom versions of posts, but maybe there is something with the way they represent the post type that makes it start to bog down after so many being published.

I’ve never had a WordPress site that has had more than a couple hundred posts on it, so I don’t have a benchmark to compare to.

We do have some general recommendations at https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/performance/optimization/ but the folks at Woo might have some more specific recommendations. 🙂

    Hi @macmanx,

The frontend of the website is loading pretty good, and I wasn’t able to notice any glitch until the checkout page.

I understand that you mentioned Hosting Support has assisted with optimizing the website. Could you please confirm whether you have already looked into the option of optimizing the database, such as removing unnecessary data or clearing transients?

Have you tried using Query Monitor to check if it helps identify any potential bottlenecks?

@macmanx : Those optimization resources are helpful. I’ve let my WordPress skills lag some over the past decade. After looking through that list, it’s clear that I’ve got some catching up to do. I’m also suspicious that I probably need to find a new host.

I used to host with Pressable, and it wasn’t bad, but they basically told me that my sites are too big for their hosting plans. I don’t think I made the best decision with my new host, as I’ve seen a lot of performance issues, some of which are likely host related.

@wpmudevsupport14 : I haven’t looked at optimizing the database, although I have been suspicious as my catalog has grown that it is likely related to the database indexing and overhead. I’ll give Query Monitor a try and see if that helps me get things figured out. I haven’t used that plugin in awhile, but that makes sense. Thanks for the suggestion.

    @wpmudevsupport14 “until the checkout page”

Did you encounter any glitches when you got to the checkout page? I’m not aware of any, but I haven’t tested on all browsers and various devices.

    Hey @robbinsathletics,

No, I did not encounter any glitches when going to the checkout page. Since this is a live website, I didn’t place an order. From what I see, the frontend is working fine without any issues.

    Hi @robbinsathletics,

I hope I’m still on time to help a bit with your issue.

For stores with very large product catalogs, a practical approach is to use a catalog-management plugin specifically designed to handle bulk actions, advanced filtering and fast product-editing workflows.

These tools can streamline the day-to-day catalog maintenance process and make it much easier to work efficiently with thousands of products.

Leaving this here in case it helps anyone dealing with similar large-catalog scenarios.

    Cheers!
