White Screen Functions.Php
-
In trying to edit my functions.php editor I think I missed a step and now all my screens to my website are white. No links work. I tried to go into “customize themes” to recopy the coded page from the original Twenty Thirteen Child Theme, but I can’t even get into my themes. Everything has a white screen.
Any suggestions here?!? HELP.
Thanks.

I’ve even tried a different application to transfer the php files. I’ve tried multiple times and its updating, but my website isn’t appearing. Maybe it’s a deeper rooted issue? I don’t understand because I only edited functions and index.
Do you have any other suggestions where I update everything while keeping the custom CSS and my plugins? This is frustrating 🙁
If I end up doing a fresh upload will I loose all my customization?
I added the entire Twenty Thirteen file and still nothing…

Ok, time to find out what the actual issue is then, since it must not be that file.
Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.
If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
If neither of those make any difference, try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.
Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.
Ok let me play around with some of your suggestions here and I will get back to you. Thank you for the advice!
Thank you everybody for the help.
James,
Re-adding a fresh WP did seem to bring back the dashboard on my end; however, it says my customized active theme is broken so it’s reverting to a default theme. When I try to activate a new (default) theme to take it from there the white screen appears, no matter what theme I choose.
Am I able to apply my dropbox backup of my entire website onto the dashboard to apply it to WP? If not, do you have any suggestions on how I proceed? My customizes CSS seems gone, but the plugins and website content still seems available.
Thanks.
Actually now I cannot access anything. The dashboard – nothing. The white screen now appears everywhere and I’m unable to reconnect back to FTP.
Update: Perhaps it was a glitch from the FTP side. I’m now in on FTP. But I’m unsure of where to go/what to do from here.

At this point I just want to access my dashboard. I think I’ve come to terms with starting from scratch, but dashboard access is what I need.
Oh my goodness there is a lord. I’ve accessed the dashboard FINALLY!!! My only (and crucial) issue is all my custom CSS is gone. My customized theme is totally wiped out. Am I able to back anything up onto here from Dropbox?
Also, every page I click on contains a 404 error “page not found.”
For the missing custom theme, one of the steps earlier was to re-name the theme’s directory. Have you named it back yet? If so, or if you didn’t re-name the theme’s directory, do you have a backup of its customization prior to this whole problem?
As for the 404’s, try re-saving your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.
Hi James,
I have reverted the directory back to the old theme name. Still nothing.
It’s odd though… all my custom CSS is still in the CSS folder. It seems as if it’s just not “applied” to the TwentyThirteen theme. I have updated my entire website to dropbox by adding the dropbox plugin (prior to the crash) to my website. The files are saved on my mac desktop. I’m not sure if this can be directly applied to WP? Any advice here? I may have to start from scratch… 🙁
For the 404’s this reset worked – THANK YOU!

Try uploading the theme directory from your backup, but first do make a backup of what you currently have there, just in case.
Ok thank you. It didn’t work, but that’s ok I’ll start over. Am I able to ask you a few custom CSS questions about changes to my new themed website?
Lastly, thank you so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it… and… lesson learned. DON’T touch php unless you’re a whizz.
Thanks again!
Am I able to ask you a few custom CSS questions about changes to my new themed website?
Sure, though I’d recommend opening them in the forum specific to the theme you’re using. If you’re using a theme from https://wordpress.org/themes/ like https://wordpress.org/themes/sydney/ for example, you’ll find a “View support forum” button on the theme’s page.
Lastly, thank you so much for your help.
Happy to help! 🙂
Hi James,
I’m curious if you can help me with one more thing. Can you provide me with a CSS code to have just TWO categories on my shop page for my desktop and mobile
( http://www.semaystudio.com/shop/ ) EVENLY spaced apart. When you reply I’ll deactivate my maintenance. Thanks,
