When you’re ready to move on from bbPress

I love the ethic of bbPress: open source, built the WordPress way, etc. Unfortunately, several limitations of the platform made it difficult for our users. Chief among these was the limited notification options and the inability to continue a conversation by replying by email to the notification email.
Website Toolbox is a robust forum solution. It looks very much like the popular, open source Discourse platform–I’m convinced its a fork. However, Website Toolbox offers a hosted, supported solution for website owners who aren’t interested in setting up their own forum servers.
As noted elsewhere in these reviews and on the plugin page, this is not a free service. However, the support is strong and the product works very well.
The feature list on their site is accurate. A few comments from our experience:
- This will sync your WordPress logins to the forum site, BUT this is a one-way transfer of information. That is, all of your WordPress users will be given a forum account (though you can control which user types receive an account). Users log in to the forum with the same credentials as to the WordPress site, and if the plugin is installed they can log in once for access to both. HOWEVER, users who log in directly to the forum can change their password with Website Toolbox–and then have two passwords, one for the forum and one for the WordPress site. This can be fixed by hiding the Website Toolbox login and using only the WordPress login.
- If you’ve created custom user profile fields in WordPress, those will not be synced to the forum.

We’ll be reaching out to you via email to discuss the custom user profile field synchronization with WordPress. That’s a great idea! We’re always looking for ways to improve the plugin.

When you install the plugin, it should automatically save your website’s log in page and sign up addresses (URLs) in the Settings -> Single Sign On section of your Website Toolbox account. That way users always sign up and log in on your website and not on the forum. They’re automatically logged in to the forum when they log in on your website. There are some cases where our plugin can’t automatically detect those URLs. In those cases, you can specify the URLs yourself in the Settings -> Single Sign On section.
