What is the correct Jquery syntax?

I just bought WP Coder and I am trying to insert Jquery. But it had no effect on the targeted pages.

Should the Jquery script start with: jQuery(function($){

?

And is this syntax corredt?

jQuery(function($){
$(‘#haaldatum’).change(function() {

var start= $(‘#brengdatum’).datepicker(‘getDate’);
