• Hi – My site displays pages just fine. But lately, updates have gotten slower and slower, until now, they time out every time. I host this site myself inside a Fedora Linux virtual machine. The site is about 10 years old by now and has been through many WordPress and Fedora upgrades. I just updated it to WordPress 6.8 on Fedora Linux 42. The newest versions of everything, except its X theme, because it times out doing updates.

In the dashboard, when I go to Updates and update anything, it waits a few minutes and then I see this in /etc/httpd/logs/error_log:
    [Sat Apr 26 06:27:07.728486 2025] [proxy_fcgi:error] pid 1098:tid 1258The timeout specified has expired: [client 10.10.10.1:61872] AH01075: Error dispatching request to : (polling), referer: https://www.bullseyebreach.com/wp-admin/update-core.php?action=do-theme-upgrade

I tried changing themes to twentytwentyfour and tried to update the X theme from the Themes page. It failed with
Update failed: 504 Gateway Timeout Gateway Timeout The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream server or application.

I’m not sure I believe the problem is really about contacting some update server somewhere – I can ping anywhere I want from this host by DNS name. I think the problem is a timeout inside WordPress someplace. Maybe some database thing that needs maintenance?

Oh – plugins. There are 11 installed plugins, including Akismet, Contact Form 7, Cornerstone, Google Analytics, Health Check & Monitoring, Jetpack, Redirection, Testimonial Rotator, Velvet Blues Update URLSs, WPBakery Page Builder, X-Shortcodes, and Yoast SEO. So, nothing fancy, and these have all been here for years.

The virtual machine hosting this website has plenty of free disk space and memory. CPU is mostly idle. I’ve tried a couple of hypervisor hosts. They are both mostly idle. Other virtual machines on the same hypervisor hosts run just fine. This VM also runs just fine, except for timing out doing WordPress theme and plugin updates.

Where can I go next to get closer to the problem?

    thanks

I recommend getting in touch with X’s support about this via https://themeforest.net/item/x-the-theme/5871901/support – as this is a commercial theme they cannot help you here with it.

Thanks – but it’s not just X theme updates. It’s all plugin and theme updates. All updates to everything from the WordPress dashboard act badly. An X theme update was waiting this morning, but others act the same way.

…or there could be some ugly browser cache things going on. I just looked at it from a different device. A few hours ago, the installed X theme was 10.6.3, with 10.6.4 ready to install. No matter what I tried, I could never get it to tell me that it updated to 10.6.4. But now, from this different device, I see the installed X theme is 10.6.4.

Maybe it performs updates as expected but never gets back to the browser client, making me think it never applied the update. Maybe that’s what’s going on. Maybe the timeout is between the site and the browser after the update finishes.

I’m on Chrome as I compose this comment with that website open in another tab. I was on Firefox earlier.

I’ll wait for the next plugin update and see what happens.
