How do you do that with FTP, I have the same issue
Same problem. Nontechie. Would appreciate a nontechie solution! Have tried/failed various fixes offered on Forum and web, including FTP access via FileZilla and Hostgator (neither of which I can make work).
Fixed it! Accessed WP files thru FileZilla. Couldn’t see how to call up the errant line of code to edit, so deleted the entire plug-in whose update had created the problem. FileZilla made deletion easy. Now I’ll be forever suspicious of plug-in updates.

Sorry for the inconvenience. This is interesting because the only way you saw that error is because your server is not running actually running on PHP 5.6.3 even though it is telling you that it is. If the update has crashed your clients site it is probably not even 5.5 but an older version (5.5 does not crash a site – it just throws a fatal error)
Some servers allow the admin to change the PHP Version via php.ini , but that won’t take effect if the php.ini on root folder don’t change. My guess is that if you check that (or ask your host to check it) you will see that the PHP version is actually < 5.5 on your server and that is what your sites are running on.
Please contact your server host and ask them to up the server PHP version to 5.6 (or 5.6.3 ) and the issue will be resolved. The upshot of doing that will ensure that your server is much more secure (PHP 5.5 has not been patched for 18 months and has known vulnerabilities) for you and your client.

I am sorry that this has happened and caused you some issues – the reason it happened is because we removed support for PHP version 5.5.0 and lower on the latest version – we did this because PHP stopped support for 5.5 in July 2016 and strongly recommend that it is not used due to security vulnerabilities – see here

WordPress Requirements state that to run WordPress system config should be
PHP version 7.2 or greater
MySQL version 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB version 10.0 or greater
HTTPS support
You can read more about that here https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/
There is a sample email that you can use on that page to send to your host to upgrade your system. As soon as you upgrade to PHP 5.6 or higher you will not have the issue and your server will be much more secure.
Please note that if the upgrade caused your site to crash that probably means that your server is running PHP 5.2.4 + which has not been supported for years and has even more ways hackers can breach your site.
If for any reason you cannot get your host to update your PHP version to at least PHP 5.6 you can install a3 lazy Load version 1.8.3 and it will work fine with those unsupported PHP versions. You can download that previous version here https://wordpress.org/plugins/a3-lazy-load/advanced/ – scroll down under the stats and you will see the Previous versions section.
