Update of plugin from 3.22.3 to 3.23.0 crashed the site with the following error:

I clicked the link in the automated WordPress email (Your Site is Experiencing a Technical Issue – “In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, Smush.”), could log straight back in and the site and plugin was working fine.

    Hi @zimbo000

Sorry to hear you are having this issue.

The “Uncaught Error: Failed opening required” indicates when the file tried to be called it was not found, it can happen on corrupted updates and then reinstalling the plugin will work fine or just a glitch when the update was happening it tried to call a file that was not yet present in your folders.

In any case, I suggest downloading the plugin from https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-smushit/ and then upload the ZIP to WordPress > Plugins > Add new > Upload, select the ZIP file and press yes when WordPress asks you if you want to replace the installed version with the new version.

    Best Regards

Just updated the same site in my original post from 3.23.0 to 3.23.4 and it crashed the site again. Different error though. As previously, I could log straight back in and the site and plugin was working fine. I did the same plugin update on the sub-domain of the site without any problems.

    thrown

    Hi @zimbo000

This error also means that the class from Smush is missing, and again, something went wrong during the update process, and manually replacing Smush core files or re-installing the plugin can help.

    Kind Regards,
    Kris
