• Hi.

We have a website that uses the nextgen plugin to display galleries.

A problem has recently arisen after a plugin update whereby our thumbnails are being cropped, even though all our settings correspond to ensuring that our thumbnails are not cropped. Details below.

NextGEN Gallery > Gallery Settings > Basic Thumbnails > ‘Override thumbnail settings’ option set to ‘No’

Settings > Media > Thumbnail size > The ‘Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)’ option is deselected.

Additionally, in looking in the code at the image size being used to display the thumbnail image I can see that it is not using the size we have specified for our thumbnails in settings > Media > Thumbnail size (max of 150 wide and a max of 150 high).

The thumbnail size is in fact using the dimensions specified when the NextGen option NextGEN Gallery > Gallery Settings > Basic Thumbnails > ‘Override thumbnail settings’ is set to ‘Yes’ (240 x 160 in this case). That setting is set to no however.

Is this a known issue with the version of the plugin we are using? The version currently in use is version 3.11.

    Am I missing something here?

    Many thanks for your time.

    Hi @salpetriere,

Let’s try re-creating the thumbnails images from “Manage Galleries”, ensuring that the “Crop thumbnail to exact dimension is disabled” then check again to see if the thumbnails got hard-cropped or not in result.

    Hi @mihaiimagely

    Thanks for your response.

When you say “Let’s try re-creating the thumbnails images from Manage Galleries”, do you mean that I am required to perform the following steps?

    1. Go to the individual gallery settings in ‘Manage Galleries’.
    2. Select all the images included in the gallery
    3. In the ‘Bulk Actions’ dropdown select ‘Create New Thumbnails’
    4. Click the ‘Apply’ button
    5. In the dialog that then appears specify our thumbnail size
    6. Click the blue ‘ok’ button

If so, I tried this on our staging website and it had no effect.

Also, I’m a little bit confused by the dialog that appears in step 5 above. If the thumbnail size is being inherited from the setting we’ve specified in settings > Media > Thumbnail size, why are we being asked for a thumbnail size again here?

    Hi @salpetriere,

NextGen doesn’t have anything to do with WP’s settings for the Media from “Settings -> Media -> Thumbnail size”. You can only adjust the global settings for NextGen’s thumbnails from “NextGen Gallery -> Other Options -> Thumbnail Options” and these will automatically apply for the new images uploads ( but these will not retroactively apply for the already uploaded to NextGen images ).

So to step back a bit to the main question here, I think we need to mention an important aspect of it. NextGen has created thumbnail images of a specific size that’s mentioned in “NextGen Gallery -> Other Options -> Thumbnail Options -> Default thumbnail dimensions” and it will display the thumbnails based on that size.

You can only for example set the size of the thumbnails bigger corresponding to the bigger image from your gallery from NextGEN Gallery > Gallery Settings > Basic Thumbnails > ‘Override thumbnail settings’ but that will of course break the grid in case that the gallery contains combined protrait and landscape oriented images. Respectively – we don’t have an ideal solution for this case while using Basic Thumbnails gallery display type that’s not perfect for displaying combos of portrait and landscape images. For these specifically, we have created such premium gallery display types like Masonry, Mosaic and Tile. Thanks for your response @mihaiimagely

    Yes I understand.

I’ve checked the settings in NextGen Gallery -> Other Options -> Thumbnail Options and somehow the ‘Set fix dimension?’ option had been set to ‘Yes’. That option was previously set to ‘No’, I’m not sure how it shifted across to ‘Yes’.

I’ve set the option to ‘No’, but now I need to rebuild our thumbnails so they are displaying at their correct size again.

I usually achieve this with the ‘AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild plugin’, but it’s not recognizing the image sizes that NextGen creates. What is your recommended method for rebuilding thumbnails?
