• Hi!

I have a simple personal blog that I write in Spanish, and I want to publish in Swedish and English as well.
I found Polylang a bit difficult to set up (the switch, the menu in the home page), and Weglot was very easy, but the free option is just 2000 words and just one language.

As a matter of fact, I do not need help with the translation of the posts. I am relatively fluent in English and Swedish.

So my question is, if I create a category for each language, can I organize my site as Polylang or Welgot does? Is there any plugin that could work like that, retrieving the English subdomain or individual posts from categories?
    Thank you!

Yes, you can also create everything manually without using a multilingual plugin. This allows you to enter all content yourself, as you have done up to now. However, there are several disadvantages you should be aware of:

    • The content you store in other languages is not marked as that language in the HTML code. The language output by your WordPress (Spanish) is always used, and no technical note is added to indicate that the texts are in English or Swedish. This can lead to disadvantages in search engine findability, as search engines cannot cope with the contradictory language information.
    • Worse still, screen readers on your visitors’ computers would try to read Swedish text aloud in Spanish. This constitutes a breach of accessibility. Visitors who rely on such aids will not be able to access your website.
    • You would also have to create media files in multiple languages, especially with regard to their alternative texts and captions. This means that you would have to store a file multiple times, which would affect the storage space on your hosting.

I would therefore recommend that you reconsider this. In addition to the multilingual plugins you mentioned, there are numerous others: https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/multilingual/ – and perhaps it would be easier for you to work with Polylang. 🙂
