We use WP-Engine’s Smart Plugin Manager (SPM), and we use the Two Factor Authentication plugin.

SPM recently updated the Two Factor Authentication plugin directly from v1.14.27 (released Nov 2024) to v1.15.5 (released June 2025). SPM had not applied the intermediate versions which appear in the Two Factor Authentication release notes v1.15.0, v1.15.1, …

I asked WP-Engine support about this (I’m very impressed by the completeness of their research; they obviously take seriously that SPM is supposed to just work) and they found that certain Two Factor Authentication intermediate released don’t seem to have ever been published, as SPM was unaware of them.

Were Two Factor Authentication releases after v1.14.27 and before v1.15.5 supposed to have been publicly released? Or was it in fact correct that from v1.14.27 the next public production release that people should generally have seen/applied was v1.15.5?

To know what versions of a plugin are released on wordpress.org, someone can visit the “tags” for that plugin; for this plugin, that’s here: http://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/two-factor-authentication/tags/ . Alternatively, the same thing shows up on the “Advanced” page for a plugin – https://wordpress.org/plugins/two-factor-authentication/advanced/ – if you go to the “Previous Versions” you can see what’s visible and what isn’t.

In the case of this plugin, there’s a Premium version which has extra features. They share the same version scheme and changelog, since it’s a single code-base – the Premium version is a super-set of the free. To, some releases are not made for the free version, for various reasons.

I encourage that, in the release notes/ change log, UNreleased versions be marked as such.

Also, the “tags” search comes out in alphabetic search order, which makes searching for releases (which must be sorted numerically) a minor pain in the eyes. Please tweak the webpage so that the release numbers display in the proper order.
