Is there a setting a can change that will allow me to smush larger sizes that are currently showing the message ‘size limit exceeded’?

Unfortunately not, no.

The free version of Smush is limited to images no larger than 5Mb in size, while the pro version accepts images up to 32Mb in size.

So if you have images larger than that, I’d suggest compressing the originals before uploading them to ensure they are no more than 5Mb.

You can use free online tools for that, like this one for example:
