Sitemap > 404 plus impressions dropped to close to zero
-
Hi Rank Math team, I’m facing two issues on my site [double link removed], I’m pretty sure they’re interlinked.
1.
The sitemap generated by Rank Math doesn’t get properly recognized by GSC. It’s an on-and-off thing. Every so often it’s ok, then it starts throwing an error message in GSC for a while. Sometimes just the posts and pages index, sometimes at the top sitemap index level, so https://mywebsite.de/sitemap_index.xml . The sitemap then—only sporadically!—returns a 404 in the frontend, too. I’ve deleted the sitemap in GSC and resubmitted several times; the pattern remains.BUT. My Rank Math 404 monitor doesn’t display any errors.
AND. I’ve validated the sitemap here: https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html. No issues detected.
I’m using:
- WordPress 6.8.3
- Elementor Pro 3.32.3
- PHP 8.3.26
- Apache server
- Rank Math 1.0.256
- Memory limit 256MB (too low for Elementor; will change this)
I’ve tried flushing permalinks. Reviewed the .htaccess and deleted all redirects written there. Disabled and later deleted the caching plugin WP Fastest Cache. Same for Autoptimize. Checked with my host to make sure there aren’t settings there preventing the correct handling of sitemaps. I also flushed the sitemap cache and added a rewrite rule to the Apache web server following the instructions in 3.2.2 here: https://rankmath.com/kb/sitemap-404-error/. And checked the robots.txt with your validator: https://rankmath.com/tools/robots-txt/ .
Could you please help me troubleshoot this?
2.
I switched to Slim SEO for a short while at the end of last year (RM is SO big). But then saw a sudden drop of impressions in GSC several days later (Could be coincidence?). So I switched back. But I’m still facing a more or less continuous flatline with a maximum of 10 impressions per day. Could the 2 problems be interlinked?Best regards,
