Roles for Subscription

I have just noted a potential issue with how I am using this plugin.
We wish to send notifications to members when there is a new topic etc. but I have just seen that this may not be happening for all our members. Most of our members are marked in “Manage Subscriptions” within the forum as being role “Author” and “Participant”. But some are only marked as “Author” and are denoted “WARNING: The setting in item 3 in settings overrides this individual setting. The Member role is set to not send subscription emails”.
If I look at one of the user records for such an “Author” there does not appear to be a way to add “Participant” as a role and in Stylepack there is no way to select or deselect Author?
So what should I do?

If users have ‘author’ which is a WordPress role, but nothing as a bbpress role (which is what your thread seems to be suggesting) then they would have no forum role, so not able to subscribe.
So for an example of a user in this state, what is showing as a bbpress role in
dashboard>users>edit users> example user?
