Problem with HTML file

    Hello,

    First, I have to say THANK YOU for this plugin! I have an older client who prefers to print everything out to read it so this is going to come in handy!

    I’m trying to create a historical archive of her blog and want a digital format so she can have everything in 1 file to copy old content from. Creating a PDF was a breeze, but the text is not coming out copy/paste friendly.

    Noticing you have an HTML file version, I gave that a try. When it creates the file, it says “Print-Page Ready” and then has a “Copy to Clipboard” button. Tried that – says it was copied, but nothing pastes. Tried doing right-click Save but that HTML file it just saves the HTML of my wp-admin screen.

    Next I tried https://printmy.blog/, thinking maybe it was the styling of their website causing issues. Tried the HTML version there and when I try to open the HTML file a code editor, there’s no actual content there either. It just has the h1 class=”site-title” with site name, a p class=”site-description” and then “Posts published on June 8, 2023,  from [client’s URL] Printed on June 8, 2023 using /*<a href=”https://wordpress.org/plugins/print-my-blog/”>*/Print My Blog. The end.

    Sorry to bug you but I can’t find any resources or FAQs on HTML; am I doing something wrong?

    Hi @abuzon, sorry the plugin has been being a bit difficult.

    Copy-and-pasting from the PDF should work ok too. What browser are you using? If you’re using the Firefox add-on for creating the PDF, that method is pretty old no longer the best option. Better is to just press “Control+P” or “Command+P” then set the “Destination” to “Save as PDF”.

    I just retried the HTML version for copy-and-pasting, and noticed it didn’t paste into this text box, but did into another program (Mac’s TextEdit). Where are you trying to paste into? It seems that’s an important part of the equation.

    And you’re right, I haven’t really documented the HTML format hardly at all. It should have worked, but I haven’t been very committed to it (debated removing it) because it’s so browser dependent and often doesn’t work.

    I’m using Chrome and Windows 10, all current versions of everything. You can tell immediately that the content from PDFs won’t copy because the cursor is the size of half the page. So when you do copy/paste from a PDF it’s just random letters and some foreign symbols.

    EDIT: RESOLVED! Just tried HTML again from the web-hosted version, with Notepad open and clicked into, then went back and Copied to Clipboard again, then Paste into Notepad and that worked!!!!! WOW!! YAY!!

    Just tried again to do HTML from the web-hosted version. I did Copy and it said “Copied! Ready to paste!” but wherever I go, and whether I CTRL+V or right-click, it just pastes the last thing I had copied an hour ago. To try to Save it as an HTML file, it just saves the HTML of the exterior container.

    The PDFs are 27 MB and 84 MB, so I can’t even email them to you. I have Creative Suite, so even when I try to Edit the smaller PDF (I think that’s from the WP plugin) you can tell the text is all chopped up into strange overlaid blocks.

    I appreciate any help you can provide! It 158 blog posts… I just can’t go into each one and copy/paste, though I’d probably be done by now LOL

    Hi @abuzon, ok good to hear some progress. Can you share the public URL of the website you’re trying to print? That would help me assess why you can’t copy-and-paste from the PDF, as that should work too.
