I want to show the reading time only on posts that use a specific template. When I add the [read_meter] shortcode to that template, it’s rendered only if the shortcode is ALSO added to the post, therefore causing a duplicate instance to be shown. In General Settings, I have both “Posts” and “Pages” unchecked.

    Follow up:
In addition to wanting the shortcode to be rendered only on posts that use a specific template, I would also like the reading progress bar to be rendered on those posts. Is this possible?

    Thanks very much!

I solved the problem by doing the following:

    1. In “General Settings”, check Posts (only)
    2. In “Read Time” uncheck Single Post, Home and Archive Page
    3. In “Progress Bar”, set Display Position to Top (or Bottom)
    4. Remove shortcode from specific post
    5. Add short code to post’s template

I’m now able to see the reading time AND progress bar only on all posts that use the specific template.
