• Absolutely stuck! Did the upgrade to 4.3.1 Seemed ok. Went to functions.php file to tweak (done this plenty before without problem) – it didn’t like it! Got a parse error message: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /www/sites/44a/e0d/www.comtruck.co.uk/web/wp-content/themes/dustlandexpress-premium/functions.php on line 320 I clicked the ‘back’ button and removed the tweak. Still the same error message. Now I have NO ACCESS to my dashboard at all. Have upgraded my php to 5.6 with my host (as a forum message suggested this may help) but has made no difference. Website is down. No idea what to do. Time critical! Any advice?

    Hi Granny Jules

Try re-uploading a fresh copy of your theme’s functions.php file by using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

Or download the functions.php file with FTP and remove the edits you made and re-upload.

When the parse error showed for the first time I was able to go back and I undid the edits and clicked to upload the changes but then the parse error remained πŸ™ I have the original functions.php file on my desktop. Do you mean I should ftp it to the files on my hosting site? And will this cure my problem of not being able to access my dashboard? Thanks (sorry for being so dim but this is the first time I’ve encountered a problem like this)

You can’t edit from within the file editor of WordPress anymore because there is an error in the file. The only way to change the file now is by using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

I would make a backup of the file as it is now by downloading it from your server (with FTP). Then re-upload the original file you have on your desktop.

Another way to fix your site is by by renaming your current theme’s folder (dustlandexpress-premium) in wp-content/themes/ using FTP. This will make WordPress use the default theme (Twenty Fifteen) instead.
