I loved BackWPup for doing backups outside the installation with .tar.gz and a real cron job. Version 5 is a mess.

    • No migration of old jobs? So all of our customers don’t have backups anymore?
    • No options to use .tar.gz, change archive name, upload without thumbnails, etc.
    • No real cron job
    • Usability isn’t much better than before, e.g. the file exclusion is too nested.

They also brought over a bug from version 4 (I think I already reported it):
If you use absolute paths in the log file path or the backup path setting (e.g. for saving backups outside the installation), they never get saved. We had to manually go into the database options, change it there, and never save it in WordPress again. Maybe you can fix that.

Will there be any of the above options in the near future? And if so, when? We used BackWPup for a lot of our clients and I hate to look for another backup plugin instead.

    Hi,

We appreciate your detailed feedback and understand that the update has impacted certain workflows.

    • Migration of old jobs: Your previous jobs have not been removed and remain accessible in read-only mode at:
      👉 admin.php?page=backwpupjobs
While the new version introduces a different backup flow, your existing jobs should still function as before.
    • Backup format & options: We’re aware of the request for .tar.gz support, archive naming, and additional customization and are evaluating ways to improve flexibility.
    • Cron jobs: The new scheduling system currently relies on preset times, but custom scheduling is being added back to the free version soon.
    • File exclusion usability: We appreciate your feedback on this and will share it with the team for future refinements.
    • Absolute path issue: Thank you for flagging this! I’ll pass it along to the developers so they can investigate and work on a fix.

We know BackWPUp is a key part of your workflow, and we’re committed to refining the experience based on user feedback. Let us know if there’s anything else we can clarify!

    Best regards.
