Member Directory search – multiple select with checkboxes

In a Member Directory search, I’d like to create a multiple select with checkboxes instead of a drop-down, and I’m looking for a clean way to do that in my child theme, without changing the UM core. Before writing my own code, I was wondering if anyone’s done this already, or has any thoughts about the cleanest way to do this that won’t break when UM is updated.

For example, if I have a member profile checkbox field “pet” with options dog, cat, fish, lizard, I’d like to search for members with a dog or a cat, using checkboxes.
