I haven’t even activated my site yet. Had to shut down my laptop and when I logged back in, everything is gone
Where is WordPress installed, exactly? On your laptop, or on a remote server?
Installed to the default setting of my domain – so remote server.
Was that a bad idea?
No, in fact it’s the best idea! That means that all of your content should still be there, safe and secure.
What do you mean when you say “haven’t activated the site yet”? Are you using a temporary URL provided by your hosting service until your domain name propagates, or is there something different happening?
I only ask because shutting down your laptop or local computer should have absolutely no effect on your remote site. Your changes are actually being saved on the remote server, rather than on your local machine.
Ok. got one thing right. phew!
Sorry- I’m probably using the wrong terminology. It wasn’t yet visible to the public. Is ‘live’ more accurate?
Oh thing occurs to me– at one point, I found I did have multiple dashboard pages open. I didn’t realize at first that “viewing” my page opened it in a new tab, so when I clicked to go back to edit mode, I was now editing in that new tab. So I closed several & tried to stay within just the one. Do you think I could have been somehow working in an inactive mode (again, terminology- ugh. do you know what I mean?)
Sometimes editing in multiple tabs can cause a headache, but it wouldn’t cause all of your posts, pages, tags and media to suddenly disappear. If the site isn’t live yet, it sounds like a temporary URL issue, or an issue with whatever plugin you’re using for keeping the site private during development. Can you post a link to your site, or if not a link, just the domain name so we can take a look and see what can be seen?
Hi Clayton. Was chatting with bluehost support this morning. it looks like the problem is multiple instances of WP installed. (Apparently the first error-ed out install I did, actually worked) They think they can restore my work. fingers crossed!
Domain is GingerGirlAdorned. Hopefully going live soon…
