Loses settings on deactivation

If I deactivate the plugin (not delete), and then reactivate, all of the settings have been reset. This is very frustrating as I have a ton of fields and I renamed them to make them nicer for export. Sometimes you have to deactivate plugins for testing, and I’d like to retain the settings on reactivation. Is it possible to fix the plugin to save the settings?
