• Hello, we have a problem with our wordpress page slowing down so much. After some time we downloaded query monitor and it showed queries that were so long. So we migrated to new database server and page was working so clean and fast (i was thinking it was easy fix) – Page Generation Time was around 0.5-1s

But unfortunally next day it is kinda same. Page Generation Time is like 10 seconds, queries are so long. So, where should we look? I was looking into cron, into some transient files, but it was looking fine. What can cause this behavior?

And yes, everything is updated and we tried basic things like cache and more

  • How big is your database and what kind of theme are you running (classic or block)?

The bigger the database, the longer queries will take to run, and the more complex queries will start taking even longer as they have to sort over more and more records. I work at an agency that uses classic themes and ACF page layouts and we’ve had issues with this causing the database to get far too large.

One suggestion would be to check your revisions. These are all saved as a separate post record with all of the post meta as well causing a lot of unnecessary records. Setting a low limit to the number of revisions kept might help to get rid of some of the size which may help speed things up, but it is hard to say.

A much harder route to improve performance would be to review the actual queries themselves and working to optimize them. That would be more relevant if the site was working well and only a few pages or queries are flagged as slow, which I’m not sure is the issue in your case.

We are running the Graviton theme together with Elementor. The database size is approximately 80 MB. Our website does not use WooCommerce. It is just simple promo web with some articles, some images.

However, we have noticed that over time the database queries have been growing significantly larger, even though no substantial changes or new content have been added to the pages. This behavior is unclear to us, and we would like to understand how it is possible that the queries keep increasing without any direct modifications.

Query Monitor should also show you the source of the slow database queries. In most cases, it is a plugin you are using.

The database size is not the issue; it does not cause anything on its own. I would guess that a plugin is performing an inefficient query, so take another close look at the Query Monitor output.
