Hi, I’m a WordPress developer since a lot of time and I like to customize plugins.

While I develop many sites in the week, I always go through the same situations, like using many plugins that could be better coded, or, plugins that should add multiple useful features and their developers don’t care.

In these cases I like to edit those and make my own version, however sometimes building a “new version” of a bad coded plugin is a really bad idea so I end developing a totally new plugin from scratch that does the same and more.

Also, sometimes I have some good ideas for new plugins and when I go to the market, they already exist but were abandoned or are very expensive.

My questions are, having in mind that WordPress (and its repository) is under GPL2:

    – Are ALL plugins/themes outside the wordpress repository GPL2 too? or they can use another license?
    – Can I take a plugin from the repository, make a new version (with more or less changes) and publish my own version in the repository? If this can be done, can I publish a paid version of this on my personal store too?
    – Can I take a paid theme/plugin, edit it, and distribuite it for free (or as alternative, sell it)?

I hope somebody can answer my questions, thanks.

The argument about whether or not WordPress and its themes and plugins are GPL is not something we’re qualified to debate here. Certainly WordPress is licensed under GPLv2, and all themes and plugins hosted on WordPress.org are required to be GPLv2 compatible in their entirety, so you are free to edit and redistribute as you see fit. If code is not licensed as GPLv2 (or later) compatible, we ask that you not bring it up here for discussion.

Hi James, thanks for your reply. I totally understand your point and I understand what we can do with the GPLv2 License.

Maybe I didn’t ask correctly, I want to know if, outside the WordPress environment, I can sell (or distribuite) a plugin under a different license? for example, If i sell a plugin on “mycustomdomain.com/store”, does that plugin need to use the GPLv2 license because it works under WordPress? Or it can use any other license?

    Thanks.

Plugins and themes available outside of the directories at WordPress.org are not necessarily licensed under GPLv2, so that would fall under “If code is not licensed as GPLv2 (or later) compatible, we ask that you not bring it up here for discussion.”

Okay I understand. Thank you very much for your reply James

    Hello,
to be totally sure. If I understood right, all themes in the https://wordpress.org/themes/ repository ar GPL.
That means, that i can download, edit ad resell these themes?
Thanks in advance for an answer.
    Cheers
