I am an Illustrator and always interested in perfecting and improving my portfolio and online presence. I’d like to test a few other block themes but have spent a ton of time building and adjusting and settuing up mine the way it is. My fear is, that upon activating a different theme to test the looks and functionality, my settings for this one will be lost. Would they go back to befoe when I switch back the theme? If not, is there a way I can prepare things so I can easily get it back to where it was? I.e. Save the whole page as a pattern in the editor so I can easily load it back?

I have looked for this but get lost in search results telling meeee what a block theme is and how to switch themes but neveeeer really answering my question. I hope this is ok to ask here.

    Thank you in advance!

I suggest you spin up a clone of your site as it is now with a staging/cloning plugin such as WP_Staging. Then you can experiment with the “staging” site without concern for losing your current site’s settings.

Despite that, AFAIK, what ever you have saved with your current theme should remain in place after cycling through various other themes. What you have now might look different or even be non-existent with other themes, but when you go back to your current theme all will be the same.

I have not verified the last paragraph to be true. It’s based upon my knowledge of how WP works. My knowledge is not all encompassing, I do get things wrong on occasion. Generally speaking, if you fear losing any sort of site configuration after a certain action, I recommend making a complete backup of your site as a fallback. Since everyone should have backups of their site anyway, it’s not really much of an extra effort to be safe.
