Issue on MS Edge Browser
-
with speculative loading prerender on hover, edge returns a white screen of death if return to previously visited page in the same session. For example, homepage -> contact us ->homepage (white screen of death) or simply homepage -> homepage (hovering on site icon) (white screen of death)
it only happens on MS Edge. Already tried on few MS Edge updates. Chrome working perfectly fine on same computer.

Very interesting, especially since Edge and Chrome both use Chromium under the hood.
What version of Edge are you observing this in?
it’s Version Microsoft Edge 127.0.2651.105 (Official build) (64-bit) and few previous releases.
Also tested on Mozilla Firefox, speculation rules were just ignored as expected.
Thank you. And are you able to replicate this on a vanilla WP install with the default theme and no other plugins other than this one?
it is a live website so I’m not sure will be able to do that. but yesterday i disabled all plugins except for elementor (and elementor pro)+ speculative loading and it was still happening. (active theme hello elementor)
Right, I don’t mean to try this on your own site but to spin up a new vanilla site like using Local or InstaWP. I don’t have access to Edge currently, but we can test next week on a vanilla site. I just wanted to verify if you can reproduce the problem on a separate vanilla site before we had a chance to test as well.
Thank you, so i have done a few testings on Edge according to your instructions and here they are
- new website on instawp + default theme : no problem
- my own website: elementor + hello theme: WSOD
- my own website: elementor + default theme: WSOD
- my own website: elementor disabled + hello theme: no problem
- my own website: elementor disabled + default theme: no problem
This made me assume something is wrong with elementor and edge and speculation rules?
Thanks so much for those tests! That really narrows down the issue. Yes, it seems like some issue specifically related to Elementor. Next week we’ll reach out to our contacts at Elementor and also maybe see if there is a known issue with Edge.
One more question: Did you configure Elementor in any particular way? Or did you simply activate Elementor and Speculative Loading on a site to cause the issue?

Hi, sorry to intrude.
I have the same problem with a custom theme. It only occurs in Edge and only on pages with a video inserted via video tags. Both with .mp4 and .webm videos. Hope this helps.@gianlucacanton Are you using Elementor as well? Please share the URL for the page that has the issue.
I do not use elementor. I use wpBackery but with customised widgets. I removed all its js, so it shouldn’t create conflicts.
You can check on this staging site https://d.mytimehotels.advivalab.it/it/.
The video is on the homepage. To see the error, you have to change pages and go back to the homepage.
If I remove the video, the error no longer occurs@gianlucacanton Thanks for the URL but it doesn’t seem to be valid. It results in a 404 and the root of the page is a generic Plesk page.
@gianlucacanton I created a sample page with a video: https://unpredictable-donkey-31a931.instawp.xyz/video/
I’m not seeing any blank screen in Edge when I navigate to this page or away from this page. Are you? I’m testing with Edge 128 on macOS. Are you on Windows? Could this be a Windows-specific issue?
@andytranhung It would be helpful if you could create a test site in InstaWP with Elementor in a way that reproduces the problem for you as well, and share the URL. On your own site, do you have a video as well?
