Okay. I think I’ve got it.

What it adds is a shortcode attribute called ‘title’

[genericon icon=twitter title="follow me!"]

Should work? I did quick test and it was okay. If you don’t put in a title, it defaults to the icon name, so [genericon icon=twitter] has the hover text of ‘twitter’
