• We’ve recently subscribed to a Dropbox Business Standard plan to use as external cloud storage for our upcoming WordPress website. The idea is to host larger assets—such as event photo galleries, videos, and members-only documents—on Dropbox and then link to them directly from the site, rather than storing everything on the web server.

At the moment, we can share these files using publicly accessible Dropbox links. However, there is a usability issue: when users open a shared link on desktop, they can view the content without any trouble, but when they try to download a file, a prominent prompt appears encouraging them to sign up for or log in to a Dropbox account. Although there is an option to download without logging in, it’s less obvious and shown in smaller text. On mobile devices, the experience is even more intrusive, as a similar prompt appears before the page fully loads (though it can be dismissed). This can give visitors the impression that a Dropbox account is required to access or download the files, even though it isn’t. From what we understand, Dropbox does not currently offer a way to disable these prompts.

If we connect our Dropbox account to WordPress using this plugin instead of relying on public share links, is it likely that these login or sign-up pop-ups would be avoided?

    Hi,

Yes, our plugin includes shortcode modules that allow you to easily list files and enable a download system.

You’re welcome to try the plugin, and if you encounter any issues or have specific requirements, please let us know — we’ll be happy to assist.

Thanks for your quick reply. Do you have any screenshots or videos you could share with us that we could see as an example of what would happen both when viewing a unique url from dropbox via your plugin from a WordPress site and when clicking on the download button?

We will be using Gutenberg in our new site, all we would want to use the plugin for would be to have an individual viewable and downloadable file (pdf, word doc, jpeg, excel, mp4 etc.) or folder with a collection of multiple files that people can click on on the relevant webpage to view and download e.g. a ‘view and download button’ at the bottom or top of a specific webpage. We would also like to avoid the annoying popups that occur if we did this via direct public dropbox links as detailed previously in our initial thread post.

Can this plugin do this so it is really easy for page visitors to view and download files and also so it is really easy for us to link any files and folders in dropbox to the front end pages of our WordPress website, without the dropbox pop ups showing? If so, would we need any paid features or the free plugin?

    Hi,

Here’s an example of a downloadable file list. If you’d like to customize the design, we’d be happy to tailor it to your needs.

The Download Links module is completely free.

    Thanks!
