• Currently, this is not an official discussion within the Korean WordPress translation team, but rather a personal idea to expand and activate the WordPress community in Korea.

The Korean WordPress community is relatively small and has a shorter history compared to Japan. Even if there is a desire for change, organized efforts are still difficult due to the lack of structure. Instead of official channels like Slack, most community engagement happens through internet forums and unofficial KakaoTalk groups.

At present, the Korean WordPress translation team mainly focuses on translating the core, themes, and plugins. However, there is no dedicated site maintainer for ko.wordpress.org, which is the official website of the Korean translation team. This lack of maintenance may be one of the main reasons for the low number of new contributors.

There are many WordPress developers and users in Korea. What if they could contribute, even just by translating a single line? However, many potential contributors do not know how to participate, preventing them from engaging. Improving accessibility for new contributors should be the top priority.

Expanding the WordPress Korean Community Through the Fediverse

What if self-hosted blogs in Korea could connect through the Fediverse? The true value of open-source lies in these kinds of connections and sharing.

Encouraging these users to naturally integrate into the Korean WordPress translation team’s network could help build a broader and more active community.

For example, Seoul WordPress Meetup posts event summaries at seoul.wpmeetup.kr, but it lacks visibility. A solution could be:

    • Creating a dedicated category for local meetups on ko.wordpress.org/team to integrate these posts.
    • Alternatively, enabling Fediverse features to allow posts to be reblogged (boosted) within the network.

    Technical Feasibility Analysis

A parsing check shows that Jetpack is not enabled on wordpress.org itself, but it is active on subdomains and subdirectory sites.

On wordpress.org/news, the like button and author profile appear in the WordPress Reader due to Jetpack’s integration with WordPress.com.

Since wordpress.org can enable federation via the ActivityPub plugin, this means it is compatible with Jetpack.

    Potential Benefits of Fediverse Expansion

If ko.wordpress.org and ko.wordpress.org/team posts could be integrated with the Fediverse (e.g., Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky, Misskey), the potential benefits include:

    • Increased visibility and engagement (higher views, reactions)
    • Greater recognition of the official Korean WordPress translation team
    • Potential increase in WordPress translation contributors

To enable federation with Bluesky, Bridgy Fed can be used:

The profile structure of ko.wordpress.org is integrated into profiles.wordpress.org. However, the ActivityPub plugin typically links user handles to author pages.

This approach could help expand the Korean WordPress community, increase participation, and enhance the visibility of the translation team. What do you think?

    Jetpack Mechanic 🚀

I wanted to jump in to mention this GitHub issue, opened to discuss if it were technically possible to run the ActivityPub plugin on the WordPress.org network:

    https://github.com/WordPress/wporg-news-2021/issues/425

I would encourage you to post there if you’d like the plugin to be enabled on rosetta sites.

The ActivityPub plugin is not related to the Jetpack plugin. You can use one on your site without using the other. You consequently do not have to worry about the Jetpack plugin when considering using the ActivityPub plugin on a site.
