Hi,
Thank you for giving BackWPUp a try.
At the moment, BackWPUp supports only FTP, not SFTP, which might explain the connection issue you faced with your NAS setup. We’ve seen that in some cases, FTP connections to NAS over the internet can be tricky, especially with port forwarding and passive mode configurations.
If possible, you might consider setting up S3-compatible storage on your NAS (if supported), as BackWPUp works well with S3 destinations. That way, you could avoid FTP limitations altogether.
Let me know if you’d like help with this or if you want to share your setup details, happy to assist further.
Yes, actually I would like some help.
- Is the standard practice to compress a backup before sending it over the internet to another location?
- I am using a Synology NAS and was having a problem getting the paths right for where I need it to send the backup to especially for large files.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back.
Yes, it is always better to compress the backup first, and you can select the ZIP format in the plugin settings for better compression.
