Does the alt text for an image matter for SEO?

My filenames will have meaningful names already.

Do I need to worry about the alt field? Should I give something meaningful?

There’s another field below… I forget what’s called, description or something I think.

How important for SEO?
It takes a minute extra time to do.
Is it worth doing?
