My site is getting hit with hundreds and hundreds of “review comment spam” posts a week. Akismet is catching most of them, but even with the preprocess_comment hook (containing custom terms) I’m still getting a dozen or more comments sneaking into the approval queue.
I’d like to try disabling comments completely for a week or two in order to see if spammers move on. But when I activate the Disable Comments plugin the existing approved comments are removed along with the ability to add new ones.
Is it possible to remove the comment option, but still show previously approved comments?

I am sorry, but, this won’t be possible, because we completely disable the comment functionality when ‘Disable Comments’ is executed. I hope you will understand that. 🙂
Instead, you may try enabling Disable Comments REST-API or XML-RPC and then check if any new spam comments appear on your website.
Hey Amin, thanks for the quick response. That’s disappointing, but I understand. I’ll just leave comments off for a week and see whether that breaks the cycle of spam.
