Child Theme Problem

I fairly new to designing websites and this is the first time I’ve used a child theme. I installed and activated Child Theme Configurator plugin. When I go to my Style.css and copy/paste the original parent theme’s style sheet after the @import line. The transparent background on my home page goes away. Just pulling the parent style.css there is a box around the home page text (just like the navigation bar on the left). Also, at the top of the left sidebar, there should be a + or – sign to show or hide the sidebar, now all I get is a red box.
