What is the validation setting for the checkbox?
Validation : Required.
Default : blank
Sign Up : checked
Element: checkbox
Values : yes
OS is W10 64 using Chrome. also tested with MS Edge and with the box shortcode removed

OK, that’s correct. At this point I can find no reason why this wouldn’t work. I suggest your try re-saving the field definitions, it might set things right again.
I changed the field validation to multiselect checkbox, with the one option, and it worked. Changed it back to single check box, it failed the validation. So have left it at multiselect for the time being!
I have noticed some other behaviour changes. On multiselect/other boxes the ‘other’ field appears next to the main, dropdown, one by default. Before it only appeared if ‘other’ was selected. Clicking into the ‘other’ box automatically selects ‘other’ (and populates it with a lot of guff from autocomplete!).
As all was ok up to 17th May perhaps a recent update has changed things?

There haven’t been any recent changes to this part of the code, and I’ve tried and failed to duplicate your results, so I’m glad you found a workaround.
The “other” input stopped being initially hidden a long time ago: I decided it was better UI to have it visible and it was causing an undesirable layout shift when it appeared.
