Upgraded to 3.5.2 – problem was resolved.
Problem back. Very Strange.
Here’s what the admin panel looks like

The menu actions still work, but all responses are text only.
“Visit Site” is now non-responsive.
I tried re-installing 3.5.2 – no change.
php_errorlog has the following errors, which roughly correspond to the garbled admin screen

Update – we have determined that the problem is being caused by some setting in our office LAN.
Where do you have WordPress installed? At the root or in a sub-directory?
WP 3.5.2 is in its own dir, under /public_html
