    Hi

i selected both in paypal and in your plugin to ALWAYS use 3d secure.

i see local USA cards, are using 3d secure. i can see in the paypal transactions this:

Card and the Processor Response Details

    Card Type: AMEX

    Address Verification Service (AVS): M

    Card Security Code(CSC): Y

Authentication Status 3DS: Y- Cardholder Enrolled

ECI 3DS: 5- Cardholder authenticated by Issuer

ECI Submitted 3DS: 05- Cardholder authenticated by Issuer

however today i took over the phone an international card and it did NOT trigger 3d secure. it was a UK based card, and shipping to USA (even without always use 3d secure, that alone would trigger to check), in paypal transactions i only see the below and nothing about 3d

Card and the Processor Response Details

    Card Type: MCARD

Address Verification Service (AVS): Exact match

    Card Security Code(CSC): Match

is this an issue with international cards or something with the plugin?

    Hi @ariban99,

Thank you for reaching out — we truly appreciate your continued support and the detailed explanation you’ve provided.

You’re absolutely right in expecting 3D Secure to trigger, especially with both “Always use 3D Secure” enabled in your PayPal account and in the plugin.

    From what you described:

    • 3D Secure is working correctly for local U.S. cards (as confirmed by the Authentication Status 3DS, ECI 3DS, etc.).
    • But with the UK-based card (used for shipping to the U.S.), the PayPal transaction doesn’t show any 3D Secure fields — which understandably raises concerns.

This behavior is not due to any issue with the plugin. The plugin is correctly requesting 3D Secure when the setting is enabled — and it’s consistently doing so if it works for other cards.

In this case, there are a few possible reasons 3D Secure did not trigger for the UK-based card:

    1. The cardholder’s bank (in the UK) may not support 3D Secure for phone-based/manual transactions, or may skip 3DS when the transaction isn’t initiated by the cardholder online.
    2. PayPal’s risk engine still has the final say. Even if you’ve set it to “Always require 3D Secure,” PayPal may bypass it based on risk analysis, device context, or liability coverage.
    3. Cross-border transactions sometimes follow different issuer or regional rules, which can affect how or whether 3D Secure is used.

Everything appears to be working correctly on your site’s side, and the decision to apply 3DS lies ultimately with the issuer and PayPal’s processing logic.

    Best regards
