wonkystuff® has been many things over the years (boundaries have been expanded in a pretty chaotic fashion if we’re honest), but since 2020 our focus is on creating bits of electronics for making noises; particularly focussed on the AE Modular system from our friends at Tangible Waves (In fact we were the first third-party manufacturer for this format with the original mm33 3×3 matrix mixer).
Here’s a quick rundown of the things on the site — the following bits are John’s area:
- Hardware: since 2018, when Ash and I started making devices for Orlando Ferguson (phase 3 of the ongoing experiment!), I have been constructing and selling slightly quirky devices for making and shaping sounds, from the original standalone core1 and matrix mixers, culminating in the current range of over 20 modules for the AE Modular system. The currently available devices can be found in the shop.
- Software/Firmware: many of the hardware modules are based on microcontrollers, so I’m quite happy writing firmware for these small devices — including a major contribution to the firmware in the Tangible Waves METER module. I also dabble with writing the odd firmware image for the GRAINS module (these and other pieces of code can be found on our GitHub page).
… but wonkystuff is also a bit of a collective, so also do a few other things:
- Music: wonkystuff also dabbles in releasing music by people we like; this is available digitally from our bandcamp page, but we also have some physical releases in the shop.
- Events: we used to put on evenings of somewhat leftfield music approximately once a month, but these have been wound down since June 2023. We may start putting things on again, but probably not as a regular occurrence. An archive of posters and lineups can be found in the events section. If you’re interested then here’s a list of people who have played over the years…
