The son of Thomas and Mary J. Crawford, Hugh was born in Greenwich in 1887. The family appears in the 1891 census, living in Greenwich, but I have not been able to trace them in 1901. By 1911, Hugh was boarding in the home of Frank Gutteridge at 27 Hopedale Road, Charlton, Kent. Hugh was now a medical student. By 14 March 1914, Hugh, now a surgeon living in Wolverhampton, was initiated into the United Grand Lodge of England Freemasons, becoming a member of Victoria Lodge, Wolverhampton. The 1915 Medical Directory confirmed that he was the Residential Medical Officer at the Wolverhampton Union Infirmary, New Cross, Wolverhapton, having been previously Assistant House Physician and Assistant House Surgeon at Sheffield Royal Hospital.
Hugh enlisted with the Royal Army Medical Corps, and was promoted to Captain and then Major. Hugh was awarded the Military Cross, which was announced in the London Gazette on 1 January 1917.
Hugh survived the war and died in Southwark in 1952
