The son of Stephen and Martha Pinches, James was born in Dudley in 1898. In 1901, they were living in Sedgley along with James’s siblings Mary A., Hannah, Lucy, Esther and Lily M. BY 1911 they were living at 7 Big Fold, Upper Ettingshall Road, Deepfields, near Bilston.
James enlisted with the 7th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment (service number 38657). Unfortunately he was killed in action on 3 August 1918. He is buried in the Harponville Communal Cemetery Extension in France.
