Robert was born on 15 October 1887 in Wolverhampton, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Jones. He was baptised in the Roman Catholic church of St Mary and St John’s in Wolverhampton on 13 November 1887. In 1891 they were living at 12 Chapel Street in Blakenhall, Wolverhampton, along with Robert’s older brother, Joseph and younger brother, Reuben Charles. Robert’s mother died towards the end of 1897. In 1901 the family were living at the same address, and Robert was joined by younger sisters, Elizabeth and Ann. The 13-year-old Robert was working as a labourer in an edge tool works. In 1911 all the family were still together at 12 Chapel Street, Robert was now employed as a ‘bottler’ at the Botanical Brewery.
Robert served with the 9th Battalion of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (service number 32864). Unfortunately he was killed in action on 22 March 1918. He is remembered at the Pozieres Memorial in France, as well as on the memorial in St Luke’s Church in Blakenhall.
