Arthur was born on 26 June 1916 in Wolverhampton, the son of Charles Henry and Agnes E. Jones. In 1921, they were living at 55 Prole Street with Arthur’s sisters Kathleen Mary, Elsie, and Doris Nora. They were living at 17 Prole Street by 1939, and Arthur was working as a grocer’s clerk.
Arthur enlisted with the 3rd Battery which became part of the larger 2nd Airlanding Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery, formed on 22 February 1945. Between 16 and the 20 March 1945, the Battery worked to get ready for the successful Operation ‘VARSITY’. This would see the largest single drop of Allied airborne forces in the Second World War, as over 20,000 men from the British 6th and American 17th Airborne Division’s would land on the east side of the Rhine near Hamminkeln and Wesel in Germany on 24 March 1945. They landed on three different Landing Zones, ‘R’, ‘P’ and ‘A’ to support different elements of the 6th Airborne Division in their missions on that day. Sadly, Arthur was killed in this action 24 March 1945. He is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in Germany.
