This posed studio photograph shows Sergeant William David (Billy) and John Harwood Wilson in uniform.
These were the sons of Thomas William and Martha Wilson. Unfortunately Martha died while her children (John, William and Gladys Lillian) were still young, and Thomas remarried, to Ada Elizabeth Titchener, in King’s Norton in 1900. The family were living in Smethwick in 1901, but by 1911 had moved to Salisbury Cottages, Sandy Lane, Wrottesley, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton. The couple had five children together (Francis H., Charles E., Arthur T., Nina A. and Amy Wilson), and Ada had two sons from a previous marriage (Alfred G. Titchener and Edwin C. Titchener)
William was born in Birmingham in 1894 and he was a student metal worker by 1911. I have not been able to confirm details of his military service or any other details of his life, but he survived the war, and died in Wolverhampton in 1975.
John was born in Birmingham on 8 September 1892. In February 1909 he joined the Royal Navy (service number J3837), but only served until October the same year. By 1911, he was a student wood worker for a cabinet maker by 1911. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps (service number 1881), first serving in France from 4 March 1915. He rose from a Private, to a Corporal and then to become a Staff Sergeant. He survived the war, and was discharged in 1919. He married Elsie M. Manley in Wolverhampton in 1921. The couple had two children, Jean R. (1922) and Olive K. (1925). John died in 1977 in Bath, Somerset.
