The sons of William Henry and Annie Groves, William Norman was born in Solihull on 7 August 1896, and John Kenneth was born in Solihull in 1897. In 1901 they were living in Sparkhill, Yardley, with their parents and sister, Annie Edna. By 1911 the family had moved to live at 15 Parkdale, Wolverhampton, and were joined by another brother, Harry Howard.
In 1903, William started attending St Giles School in Willenhall. He enlisted with the 1st/6th (T. F.) Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (service number 2845), and became a Lance Corporal. He was killed in action on 1 July 1916. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial, in France.
John enlisted as a Gunner in the 47th Battery of the Royal Field Artillery (service number 191531). He was admitted to the 14th Field Hospital with scabies, but was discharged back to his duties in June 1918. Unfortunately he died on 4 October 1918. He is buried in the Noyelles-Sur-L’Escaut Communal Cemetery in France.
