George William Coulter

George was born in Wolverhampton in 1892, the son of William and Sarah Coulter. In 1901 they were living at 3 Lord Street, Bradley, Bilston, along with George’s siblings Elizabeth, William, Mary and John. They were living at 25 Slater Street, Bradley, in 1911, but the only children still at home were George, William and John. George now worked as a packer in the Galvanize Trade. George married Bertha M. Davies in Moffat, Colorado, United States of America, on 1 April 1914.

George served during the First World War, but I have been unable to confirm details of his military service, other than that he survived the war.

On 15 December 1947, George left the United Kingdom from Southampton on the Aquitania, bound for Halifax, Canada, along with his wife, Bertha. Their last address in the UK was given as The Gardens, Coven Heath, Wolverhampton, and George’s trade was listed as engineer. He died in Vancouver, Canada on 8 January 1963 at the age of 70.

George William Venables

George William Venables was born in Wolverhampton in 1874. By 1901, he was living at 5 Bell Street, which was the stables for the “Coach and Horses” public house. Venables was a cab driver, and he lived there together with horse driver Alfred Palmer and hotel brewer Thomas Payne. On 13 December 1906 he married Annie Jordin at Claverley in Shropshire, and the couple went on to have three children – Horace George, Gwendolene, Joseph and William R. – between 1907 and 1919. In 1911, they were living at Coven Heath, by which date George had become a licensed victualler.

George enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps on 12 October 1915 at the age of 40. By November, he was embarking from Southampton on the “Cardiganshire” to Alexandria. During his military service, George spent time in hospital with malaria and finally embarked for home on 8 August 1918. George died at the age of 77 in 1952.

Albert Preece

Albert Preece was born in Wolverhampton in 1894, the son of John C. and Martha Ellen Preece (nee Wynn). In 1901, the family were living at 60 Fordhouses, and Albert appeared with his parents, his brother Harry and sisters Ellen and Ann. By 1911, the family are at Coven Heath, Bushbury, and Albert has become a farm labourer. They have been joined by a further daughter, May.

Albert joined the Royal Field Artillery as a Fitter (number 820695). He survived the war, but unfortunately died on 23 February 1919. His death certificate records that he died of influenza and cardiac failure at 34 South Street, Bushbury with his sister in law, A. Preece of Light Ash, Brewood in attendance. It also records his occupation as being a Gunner in the RFA and a Railway Engine Fireman. He is buried at Bushbury (St Mary) churchyard, and is commemorated on the memorial at the church.
